Why Poland?

Poland attracts both students and workers with an economy that has grown rapidly since joining the EU, a cost of living noticeably lower than in Western Europe, and universities offering English-taught programmes. As it is in the Schengen Area, a Polish residence card also makes travelling within Europe easier.

Cities and cost of living

Warsaw is the most expensive city and offers the widest range of job opportunities; Kraków and Wrocław stand out for student life and the IT sector; Gdańsk, Poznań and Łódź are more affordable options. Rent, food and public transport are generally considerably cheaper than in Germany or the Netherlands.

  • Money: The country does not use the euro; salaries and rent are in złoty, so factor exchange rate fluctuations into your budget.
  • Language: In big cities, everyday matters can be handled in English; Polish is a major advantage for official procedures and working life.

Work and residence

Non-EU citizens usually arrive with a work permit obtained by the employer and a national (D) visa; as the stay lengthens, a single application for temporary residence and work (karta pobytu) is made. Demand is high in logistics, manufacturing, IT and services. Requirements: Poland work visa.

Education

English-taught bachelor's and master's programmes, as well as English-taught medicine and dentistry, are widely available; tuition fees are reasonable compared with Western Europe. Programmes: Studying in Poland, University education in Poland, Studying medicine in Poland.

Visas and family

For short visits, see the Poland tourist visa; to join your family, the family reunification visa; for all types: Poland visa application.
