Why Germany?

Germany is Europe's largest economy and one of the countries that has noticeably eased its immigration rules in recent years to close its skilled labour shortage. For people moving from Turkey, the large Turkish community, Turkish supermarkets, associations, and Turkish-speaking doctors and lawyers make the integration process easier.

Cities and cost of living

Rent is the biggest factor in your budget. Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Stuttgart are the most expensive cities; Berlin has also become much more expensive in recent years. Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz and the cities of the Ruhr area (Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg) are more affordable. For students, dormitories and shared flats (WG) are the most economical option.

  • Housing: Finding a home in big cities can take weeks; plan temporary accommodation before you move.
  • Health insurance: Compulsory for everyone; employees are automatically enrolled in statutory insurance through their salary.
  • Address registration (Anmeldung): You must register with the local authority shortly after moving; your bank account, tax number and residence procedures all depend on this registration.

Routes to work

  • EU Blue Card: For university graduates with a job offer above a certain salary threshold; the threshold is updated every year and is lower for shortage occupations (IT, engineering, healthcare).
  • Skilled worker visa: For those whose diploma or vocational training is recognised in Germany and who have a job offer.
  • Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte): Since 2024, it allows you to come to Germany and look for work without a job offer under a points system.
  • Ausbildung: Paid vocational training; the language requirement is usually B1–B2.

Requirements and document lists: Germany work visa, Ausbildung visa.

Education

Most public universities charge no tuition fees; students pay a contribution per semester (the state of Baden-Württemberg charges fees to non-EU students). For the student visa, living costs are proven with a blocked account; the amount is updated every year. Programme and university options: Studying in Germany, University education in Germany, Language courses in Germany.

Visas, family and residence

A Schengen visa is obtained for short visits and a national (D) visa for long stays, which is converted into a residence card in Germany. For spouses and children, see the family reunification visa; for tourist visits, the Germany tourist visa; for all types: Germany visa application.
